IVF and with the help of mitochondria donation
What is mitochondrial donation? Mitochondrial donation is an IVF-based technique to replace the faulty mitochondrial DNA in the patient's eggs with healthy mitochondrial DNA from a donor egg.
Mitochondria donation is a cutting-edge fertility treatment that can improve egg quality and boost the chances of successful IVF, even for women of advanced maternal age or with a history of failed IVF cycles. The mitochondria are the powerhouses within each cell, generating the energy needed for an egg to develop into a healthy embryo. However, as women age, the mitochondria in their eggs can become damaged or depleted, leading to poor egg quality, embryo fragmentation, and IVF failure.
Mitochondria donation supplements an intended mother's eggs with healthy mitochondria from a young, fertile donor. This rejuvenates the eggs with robust new mitochondria that can dramatically enhance fertilization rates, embryo development, and successful implantation and pregnancy.
The procedure is performed by carefully extracting the nucleus from the intended mother's egg and transferring it into a donor egg with its nucleus removed but still containing the donor's healthy mitochondria. The resulting egg is then fertilized with sperm and transferred to the intended mother's uterus. While not yet FDA-approved in the US, mitochondria donation is available at select IVF clinics abroad, and it is possible with us at our NEST clinic in Tirana, Albania, offering new hope to women struggling with infertility due to poor egg quality. With the power to turn back the biological clock and give eggs a healthy energy boost, mitochondria donation may be the breakthrough that helps countless women finally realize their dreams of motherhood.
